Joan Malara

February/March 2007

Richmond Habitat's
Volunteer of the Year

Joan Malara moved to  Richmond, VA from Danbury, CT three years ago along with her sister who had a job transfer.  She began volunteering with Richmond Habitat in our office, assisting with data entry.  At that time, there was a huge amount of backlogged volunteer information to be entered, and with Joan’s help, the work time was cut in half.  We knew right then we had better hold on to Joan!

Currently, Joan performs data entry, inputs receipts from our Restore, coordinates our mailing efforts with staff, and trains other office volunteers and new staff on our database system!  Joan has also eagerly donated hundreds of “sweat equity” hours to many of our homeowners.  Our experience with volunteers has taught us that in the best office environment, one can’t tell the paid staff from the volunteers; that certainly holds true for Joan.  Her familiarity with our organization, her loyalty and her commitment to any task makes her a huge, huge asset to us and provides us unbeatable help.  More than that, her quick wit, care, and good nature has made her a friend to many of us.

Joan will relocate to Long Beach Island, NJ in March of 2007, so this is our chance to thank her publicly for all her hard work and her dedication over the past three years.  Without Joan, there will be a void in the office; we joke it will take at least 10 volunteers to fill her role!  It has been our blessing to have her, and we wish her the best of luck.

After breaking ground on the newest section of Bel Green Villas at Brickshire, builder Joe Hill of Bel Arbor Builders and Village Builders has begun a new sales campaign. That campaign is based upon the community’s low maintenance feature and the builder’s offering $10,000 for an old but functioning lawn mower.  After a homeowner closes on a new Bel Green home, the lawn mower will be donated to Richmond Metro Habitat for Humanity
