Volunteer
Volunteers are vital to the success of our program. Our volunteers range from students to retirees, from skilled tradespeople to weekend do-it-yourselfers, from church, synagogue and mosque members, to colleagues from large companies to co-workers from small businesses. Volunteers put aside their television remote controls for a chance to get in the game, trading tennis racquets for paintbrushes. Volunteers pass on a tee time to swing a hammer and help a neighbor. The common thread is the desire to take part in something big and see the tangible results – to help build decent, modest homes in partnership with working families who are looking to provide a better future for their children.
Our volunteers keep construction costs low by providing free labor and services. Their time commitment has a real value to our homeowner families, averaging a $50,000 – $60,000 savings on mortgage payments.
Our volunteers find a deeper understanding of their faith by putting personal beliefs into action. They form bonds with homeowners and each other, crossing socio-economic, racial and cultural lines, thereby strengthening and uniting the fabric of our community.
More than 34,000 volunteers have built with Richmond Habitat since our founding in 1986; that’s over 68,000 hands that have touched the lives of Richmond families.

Safety Note: For safety and liability reasons, all volunteers working on a construction site must be at least 16 years old. Youth (ages 14 and 15) who are too young to swing a hammer on a construction site can volunteer at the Richmond Habitat Restore, located at 1901 Roane Street, off School Street and Chamberlayne Avenue.
Want to help but can’t swing a hammer? Volunteer at our offices; join a Richmond Habitat Committee; become a member of our Speaker’s Bureau; or help out in the Richmond Habitat ReStore!
“I have had wonderful experiences working with Richmond Habitat for Humanity. I never knew I’d have so many friends at the end of one day of working! I enjoyed working with the homeowner - it was a very personal feeling getting to know the person(s) the house is being built for. Some people leave foot prints on your soul, you never forget them or your experience, Richmond Habitat for Humanity is one of those for me.”
