Giving Back Through Volunteering: Retex Roofing

Richmond Habitat is lucky to utilize thousands of volunteers each year to help us build homes for local families. We estimate that the use of volunteer labor saves us on average $54,000 per home we build. While many of our volunteers are caring individuals interested in giving back, we are always excited when a local business decides to make volunteering a regular part of their mission.

One local company who has committed to making volunteering a regular part of their business model is Retex Roofing. The Retex Roofing team volunteers with us on the construction site on a monthly basis. Led by Roofer Josh and his wife Katelyn, they are a family-owned and operated business whose core values include giving back to the community that they serve.

Josh and Katelyn both have personal reasons for choosing Habitat for Humanity as the nonprofit they volunteer with. Josh comes from a long line of contractors, including his father. He loves learning the ins-and-outs of construction and building homes, making Habitat an easy organization to volunteer with. For Katelyn, her grandfather was very involved with Habitat throughout his life. She loves volunteering with Habitat because it gives her a connection to her grandfather while helping to provide housing for local families.

According to Katelyn, Retex has loved every build experience they’ve participated in so far, from helping out with framing, painting and installing trim boards, to getting to know their fellow volunteers and the Habitat construction crew. They’ve also been fortunate enough to meet a couple of the future homeowners, which has been a heartwarming and motivational experience for their team.

When asked what she would say to another company who is thinking about sending out their employees to volunteer, Katelyn responded, “We highly encourage other companies to consider volunteering with Richmond Habitat! Spending a day on a job site not only helps out your local community, it also creates a hands-on team-building exercise for your employees. We find spending a day out of the office (or, from working remotely) to get our hands dirty volunteering brings a refreshing change-of-pace each month while allowing our team to bond and give back.”
