Welcome Home John & Tanya!
Today we celebrated new homebuyers John & Tanya and their family! John and Tanya are a hard working couple who are determined to show their children that they can overcome obstacles and achieve their goals if they work hard and put their mind to it!
In Tanya’s own words owning a home will, “…mean everything to us – to have something we can pass down to our kids. They can see their parents did it and it will be a start to building generational wealth for my family.”
Until recently, the family lived in a dusty home that had lead paint and little insulation – leading to extreme temperatures in the winter and summer. The home also had mold and several of their children now suffer from asthma due to those living conditions.
In the spring, John & Tanya’s family moved into the first of two affordable rental homes piloted by Richmond Habitat. This quality and energy efficient home provided them a healthy and affordable place to rent while they worked towards homeownership. The monthly rent is capped at no more than 25% of their monthly income, ensuring their rent is affordable and allowing them to save money for a down-payment and other necessary expenses.
This morning we dedicated their new home to them through Richmond Habitat’s Affordable Homeownership program with which they will have an affordable, zero percent interest mortgage.
