About the Future Homeowner
Ashraf and Reem met 22 years ago, shortly after immigrating to the United States. They have dreamed of having a safe, permanent and affordable home for their four children for many years. Now, through Richmond Habitat’s Affordable Housing Program, that dream is coming true.
Originally from Syria, Reem is a stay at home mom who cares for her four children. She worries because three of their children have asthma and she wants them to live in a home that won’t make their asthma worse. Ashraf, who currently works as a local tractor trailer driver, found out about Richmond Habitat when volunteering through his previous job. He thought this could be a way for them to purchase a home that would belong to them forever.
Through Richmond Habitat’s homeownership program, Ashraf and Reem will purchase a safe, healthy home and pay an affordable mortgage, making their dream of homeownership a reality. They are completing 10 financial and homeownership education classes and attending monthly one-on-one budgeting sessions to make sure they have the tools needed to be a successful homeowner. They are also working toward 350 hours of “sweat equity”, or volunteer time, helping to build homes and working at our ReStores.
“This has been a long-term goal of ours and it is a dream come true. It will be a wonderful new permanent home for our family and will help with my children’s asthma issues.”
