Frontline Healthcare Worker Receives Keys to New Home During COVID-19 Pandemic
Richmond Metropolitan Habitat for Humanity welcomed Terri to her new home in the Randolph neighborhood in the City of Richmond.
Terri, a Patient Care Tech at one of the local hospitals and a mother to her young son Derrick, purchased her home through Richmond Habitat’s Affordable Homeownership Program. As a healthcare worker, Terri has been on the frontlines during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Prior to moving into their new home, Terri and Derrick lived in one of the local public housing developments. She was unable to let her son outside to play due to the violence and gunshots heard regularly in her neighborhood.
At the same time, staying inside in her apartment was scary as well. The building that she lived in was old and had constant problems that took maintenance weeks to fix.
Terri’s number one priority is her son Derrick,
“I am really proud of my son. He never ceases to amaze me. He is kind, sweet, smart, and gentle. I am honored God chose me to be his mom. Whenever I feel tired, frustrated, or a little down, just seeing his little face makes every single struggle worth it.”
Terri found out about Richmond Habitat’s Affordable Homeownership Program through a friend. She took a chance, applied and was accepted.
When Terri closes on her home, she will have completed 10 financial and homeownership education classes and 350 hours of “sweat equity.” She will purchase her home from Richmond Habitat and pay an affordable, zero percent interest mortgage that will make her dream of homeownership, and the safety and security that it brings, a reality.
