This year, Richmond Metropolitan Habitat for Humanity is celebrating 40 years of building homes, communities, and hope.
What began as a meeting between volunteers at Aunt Sarah’s Pancake House in May 1986 has grown into a dedicated affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, addressing some of the region’s most pressing needs.
Since our founding in May 1986, Richmond Habitat has built 398 homes and completed 240 home repairs for individuals and families in Richmond, Henrico, and Chesterfield. We've expanded our programs, opened two ReStores, and worked alongside thousands of volunteers and donors to help people achieve the dream of homeownership. Take a look at some of our highlights from the last four decades in the video below.
Celebrate with us!
Please join us for some exciting events throughout 2026 as we mark our 40th Anniversary:
- 400th Habitat Home - In Spring 2026, we will hold a home dedication to commemorate the completion of our 400th home built for a Habitat homeowner (actual date to be determined once construction is completed).
- Week of Building Hope - May 11 to May 16 will be a special week of volunteer events and opportunities where we hope to engage at least 400 individuals.
- 40th Anniversary Celebration - On September 19, everyone is invited to our 40th Anniversary Celebration party to toast the past, present, and future of Richmond Habitat.
“For 40 years, Richmond Metropolitan Habitat for Humanity has been rooted in the belief that everyone deserves a decent place to live,” Dave Neary, CEO, said. “Looking back, we’re humbled by what this community has built together: homes raised by volunteers, families strengthened through partnership, and neighborhoods transformed by hope. This anniversary honors the legacy of all who laid the foundation for our work and carried it forward year after year.”
