Volunteers are working on Richmond Habitat’s 400th Habitat home, marking a major milestone in our 40-year-long mission to bring people together to build homes, communities, and hope.
This home is part of the Highland Grove development and is scheduled for completion in May 2026. The home dedication ceremony will be on May 16, as part of Richmond Habitat’s 40th Anniversary Week of Building Hope, in which we hope to engage 400 volunteers in one week.
“Building our 400th home is a testament to what is possible when a community comes together,” Dave Neary, CEO, said. “Every Habitat home is built on a foundation of partnership between families, volunteers, donors, and our dedicated staff. This milestone represents hundreds of families whose lives have been changed through the power of an affordable home.”
Construction of the 400th home comes at a time when the need for affordable housing in Central Virginia is at an all-time high. Home prices have continued to rise, while many residents struggle with unaffordable rents and the lack of attainable housing options. Richmond Habitat's Homeownership Program ensures individuals pay no more than 30% of their income on housing.
“Affordable homeownership is more than just a roof over your head,” “Affordable homeownership is more than just a roof over your head,” Amy Daniel, Vice President of Homeowner Services, said. “It gives families stability, a sense of pride, and the ability to plan for their future. We see firsthand how that stability impacts everything from a child’s education to a parent’s ability to grow in their career. Celebrating our 400th home means celebrating 400 families, each with their own story, who now have that strong foundation.”
The future Habitat homeowner is currently working through Richmond Habitat’s Homeownership Program, taking homeownership education classes and attending budgeting sessions while also contributing sweat equity to build her own home.
“I think you can look at the 400th home in 40 years and it’s a depiction of the need for Habitat and its success,” our 400th homeowner said in her interview for our 40th anniversary video. “It works. Proof that it works.”
